Leveraging the mobile device’s ease of use and multi-touch user interface, Yellowfin has created an analytics app that targets a wider range of users.

In its latest effort to put business intelligence software into the hands of everyday users, Yellowfin has rolled out a mobile BI app for the iPad that is said to integrate ease-of-use and collaboration capabilities to deliver consumer-oriented business analytics.

The enterprise mobility software, available for download from Apple’s App Store, includes a user interface that supports the iPad’s multi-touch screen, as well as a way for users to view reports, toggle between chart and table mode, and initiate an action with a single touch.

New collaboration capabilities allow multiple users to comment on reports by creating or joining an existing discussion, or to overlay information onto business data to provide perspective and context, the company said. In addition, applied filters can drill down into the data to sort through reports or apply business intelligence analytics to uncover trends.

“Yellowfin’s approach to mobile BI is based on the firm belief that using a mobile BI application should be as fun and easy as browsing an online magazine or sharing ideas with friends across social networks,” said Yellowfin CEO Glen Rabie in a statement.

According to Rabie, Yellowfin was responding to the consumerization of BI and the need for greater return on investment (ROI) for BI projects. “Widespread user adoption—empowering as many relevant decision-makers as possible with reporting and analytics—is the best method for turning the insight generated by BI into action,” Rabie said. “That’s exactly what Yellowfin’s new iPad app delivers.”

The mobility app uses existing Yellowfin report content, so there is no need to re-create or repurpose content for the mobile platform. In addition, Yellowfin’s mobile applications, including BI for iPhone and Android devices, use the vendor’s existing security infrastructure. No data is stored on the mobile device unless offline data exploration is enabled by the administrator.
