QlikTech unveils its QlikView 11 business intelligence software, saying the upgrade brings greater social interaction into the realm of BI and helps companies tap the wisdom of their employees.
If part of the job of a business intelligence system is to tap the wisdom of a company’s employees, BI software vendor QlikTech took a major step in that direction this week.
The company launched version 11 of its flagship QlikView software, touting new capabilities that QlikTech said incorporate Web 2.0 capabilities and social interaction into a business intelligence context.
Collaborative workspaces are a new feature at the heart of QlikView’s upgrade. Business users, whether they have a licensed seat to use the BI software or not, can participate in real-time collaboration sessions, QlikTech revealed in a statement announcing the new release. “All participants in a collaborative session interact with the same analytic app and can see others’ interactions live,” the company said. The QlikView BI software is accessible from a variety of devices, including tablet computers and laptops for workers who access the BI system remotely.
With the latest version of the software, QlikView users can also engage with one another during the development of applications and later, while the apps are in use. BI users can post suggestions via notes while a new application is being developed, and once it launches can share insights and questions about the data surfaced by the system. Those social interactions remain available after the fact as threaded discussions, according to the company, much as instant messages or text streams can be accessed on social media sites or on smartphones.
The company explained the new social capabilities as a way of deriving stronger business insight from the wisdom of a company’s many users. “Our vision for QlikView 11 builds on the fact that decisions aren’t made in isolation, but through social exchanges driven by real-time debate, dialogue, and shared insight,” said Anthony Deighton, the company’s CTO, in a statement.

In addition to the social elements of the new software, QlikTech said it beefed up the search capabilities of QlikView 11 with new comparative analysis features that take advantage of user-defined groupings. The company also said it made enhancements to the BI application development process—giving more power to business users to create their own reports—and boosted the security capabilities of the BI software for large companies.
